SIAE ALFOplus microwave links in South Africa
Our SIAE range is for building point-to-point microwave radio links in the 17GHz band, the kind used by ISPs, campuses and businesses linking sites. At its core is the ALFOplus 17GHz link kit, rated at 100Mbps and upgradable to 500Mbps, with SFP and copper interfaces.
To go with it there are 17GHz parabolic dish antennas in 30cm (33.3dBi), 60cm (38dBi), 90cm (40dBi) and 120cm (45dBi) sizes, and a single-mode SFP+ module with a duplex LC connector for runs of up to 2km.
Planning a SIAE link
Antenna size is the main choice. Bigger dishes have higher gain, which helps on longer hops and in rain, but they need sturdier mounting and more careful alignment. A short link between neighbouring buildings may work well with a 30cm dish, while longer links call for 90cm or 120cm. Use the same size at both ends unless a link study says otherwise, and make sure there is clear line of sight.
Check whether you will connect to your switch over copper or fibre. For fibre, the SFP+ module is single-mode, so it must be paired with single-mode fibre and a matching module at the switch end.
